MORE ABOUT THE OPERA
‘Not In My Town‘ is a riveting and evocative musical drama, written by composer Michael Ross, based on the events surrounding the death of Matthew Shepard. Matthew was young gay man who was bullied, beaten and left to die. His friends and his community worked to make a better world, by standing up to bigotry and campaigning for passage of the national Hate Crimes Prevention Act. In addition, this musical work sends a powerful message of anti-hate and tolerance. ‘Not In My Town’ moves you with its compelling story and beautiful melodies, and while it is rooted in Matthew’s senseless tragic death, it’s most noteworthy that the message is ultimately one of acceptance and love. Today, Matthew’s story is more especially relevant than ever, as it shows how we can harness our strong emotions and grief to make a better world for the future.
